National Environment Management Council (NEMC) is set to issue interim environment protection permits to investors without undue delays as part of government’s efforts to make the investment and business climate very friendly to investors and business people.

Deputy minister of State in the Vice-President’s Office (Union and Environment), Musa Sima said here yesterday when speaking at a consultative meeting. He said that the government has consented issuance of interim permits by NEMC to allow investors to carry out initial investment stages while detailed paper work went on.

The permits should be issued between 7 and 14 days, he told delighted delegates. further explaining that issues that earlier needed ministerial approval were now being approved by the NEMC.

Answering queries of investors, businessmen and government workers during the meeting. Sima said “NEMC was doing a great job in protecting national environment. but also said the council was currently expected to be a very active facilitator of the government’s present efforts directed towards steady improvement of the investment and business climate.”

The council. he said, was also expected be a hospitable consultant of investors while protecting the environment using the Management Environment Act of 2004 and its regulations.

“The duty of the Vice President Office is to ensure all laws and regulations relating to protection of environment are observed and the enforcement IS done by NEMC. This means all investment and business activities must abide by the laws without fail.” he told the delegates.

The deputy minister thanked all investors and the business community for understanding and supporting the government’s intentions and positions on investment and doing business in Tanzania.

“We thank you all for understanding the government’s good and clear intents and positions on investment and doing business in our country. We ask you to continue observing laws so that you can do your business peacefully and safely.” He asked investors to establish seedling nurseries and plant trees in their premises.

Responding to land issues raised by delegates, the deputy minister called on NEMC to save investors from agonizing hardships and delays by making internal communication with public bodies so that investors can be allocated land in time.

Morogoro Regional Commissioner Loate ole Sanare told the meeting that their region had plenty of untapped arable land, minerals and tourist attractions. He invited prospective investors to invest in the region, saying district councils had completed land-use programmes that seek to ensure environment remains in its natural form when social and economic activities were undertaken.
